



To enter Honduras and Roatan, a valid passport is required. You can stay as long as 30 days in the country
without a visa. Visa extensions are possible up to a total stay of 90 days, and then you are required to leave
the country.
The Lempira is the official currency of Honduras but US dollars are becoming accepted more and more and are
used as often as Lempiras in the Bay Islands.
Roatan International Airport “Juan Manuel Galvez” receives international airlines such as American,
Continental, Taca and Blue Panorama (the Italian Charter). Local airlines such as Atlantic Airlines, Sosa
Airlines, and Islena Airlines fly daily to the
main land, Utila and Guanaja.
The Port of Roatan receives on a weekly basis many Cruise Ships such as Royal Caribbean,Carnival,
Norwegian, Nantucket Clipper, Princess Cruises, Silver Sea, and others.
The local language in Roatan is a colorful Caribbean English. English and Spanish are both the main languages
spoken by Islanders. This is due to the fact that even if the Bay Islands are now part of Honduras (where the
mother language is
Spanish), these islands where a British colony up to 130 years ago. The current population of the Bay Islands
is approx 85,000. Roatan has approx 65,000 of these.
Roatan offers the best of both worlds, an international airport with direct flights to the US and Italy, a ferry
which services the mainland and islands of Honduras twice daily, public and private hospitals and a growing
number of marinas. Currently a golf course and club is in the planning stage. While this sounds like many
other Caribbean destinations, Roatan and the rest of the Bay Islands has still its untouched charm, miles of
remote sandy beaches and small fishing villages. In recent years many quality planned developments have
begun in Roatan while also many areas remain on the Island perfect for people who are looking to just get
away from it all.
Roatan activities just continue to grow. If you love the outdoors and the water there is maybe no better place
in the Western Caribbean. Roatan is world famous for diving and has been rated as one of the premier
locations for diving in the Caribbean because it is surrounded by the second largest Coral Reef formation in

The snorkeling, kayaking, boating and sailing options are endless. If fishing is your thing no need to fear the
sports fishing is great- tarpon, marlin, and tuna are all caught off the shores of Roatan. While on the East End
of theIsland world-class fly-fishing can be found on the many mangrove and sand flats. Out of the water the
fun does not stop, horse back riding, biking, hiking, canopy adventures and just exploring in search of that
ultimate hidden cove or pirates’ hidden treasures are also popular activities.
Roatan is home to a wide colorful range of restaurants, whether local or international cuisine is your thing,
you will be sure to have your taste buds alight in Roatan. The fresh seafood in Roatan is a specialty; lobster,
crab, shrimp, conch and a variety of tropical fish are served in most places on the island. Another favorite is
the fresh fruits that are served in many restaurants; tropical smoothies and cocktails are a favorite for many
on Roatan.
The bars of West End have become famous of the recent years; Friday and Saturday nights with live music
and Caribbean discos are where everyone can be seen at the end of week. Sunday gatherings such as Hole
in the Wall, Ricks American Café and Mayan Princess are also very popular places to enjoy a great meal and a
few cool drinks and to enjoy the wonders of the Island on a lazy Sunday. During the week the restaurants
and bars all over Roatan continually serve up something special for everyone.
Coxen Hole and French Harbour are the main towns on Roatan and have a few grocery stores, banks, post
office and a variety of local stores. Both towns offer a nice place to meet and interact with the friendly local
people. West End is considered the“Turistic Village ”, and is only a few minutes away from West Bay Beach
which is the best beach on the West side on the island. Other areas such as Sandy Bay, South Shore and
North Side are beautiful residential areas.
